General dosing instructions

Carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of INDOCIN and other treatment options before deciding to use INDOCIN. Use the lowest effective dosage for the shortest period corresponding to the individual purpose of treatment of patients. After monitoring the response to initial therapy with indomethacin, the dose and frequency should be adjusted according to the individual approach of the patient’s needs. Adverse reactions usually correlate with the dose of indomethacin. Therefore, every effort should be made to determine the lowest effective dosage for an individual patient. The dosage recommendations for the active stages are as follows: Moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, including acute outbreaks of chronic diseases; Moderate to severe ankylosing spondylitis; and Moderate or severe osteoarthritis INDOCIN 25 mg (5 ml) twice a day or three times a day. If it is well tolerated, increase the daily dose by 25 mg (5 ml) or by 50 mg (10 ml), if required, with continued symptoms, at weekly intervals until a satisfactory response is obtained or until a total daily dose of 150-200 mg (30 – 40 ml) is achieved. Doses above this amount usually do not increase the effectiveness of the drug. In patients with persistent night pain and/or morning stiffness, serving a large portion, up to a maximum of 100 mg (20 ml), of the total daily dose before bedtime may be useful for relief. The total daily dose should not exceed 200 mg (40 ml). In acute outbreaks of chronic rheumatoid arthritis, it may be necessary to increase the dosage by 25 mg (5 ml) or, if necessary, 50 mg (10 ml) per day. If minor adverse effects develop as the dosage increases, quickly reduce the dosage to a tolerable dose and carefully monitor the patient. If serious adverse reactions occur, stop the drug. After the acute phase of the disease is under control, an attempt to reduce the daily dose should be made several times until the patient receives the lowest effective dose or the drug is discontinued. Careful instructions and observations of individual patients are necessary for the prevention of serious, irreversible, including fatal, adverse reactions. As the years progress, the likelihood of adverse reactions seems to increase, INDOCIN should be used with greater caution in the elderly. Acute painful shoulder (bursitis and/or tendinitis) INDOCIN 75-150 mg (15-30 ml) per day in 3 or 4 times the dose. The drug should be discontinued after signs and symptoms of inflammation have been monitored for several days. The usual course of therapy is 7-14 days. Acute goose arthritis INDOCIN 50 mg (10 ml) three times a day is painfully tolerable. Then the dose should be quickly reduced until the drug is completely stopped. Final pain relief was reported within 2-4 hours. Tenderness and warmth usually subside after 24-36 hours and swelling gradually disappears after 3-5 days.
