Active substance: Lamotrigine
Pharmacological effects: The active ingredient of Lamictal is Lamotrigine which belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsant. The drug decreases the pathological activity of neurons oppressing their function. Lamictal stabilizes the neuron membrane by affecting the Na+ channels and blocking excessive release of stimulating amino acids, without having any effects on the normal neuron fucntion.
Indications: The preparation is indicated in treatment of epilepsy in adults and children older then 2 years of age having effect on:
- Partial seizures
- Generalized seizures
- Tonic-clonic seizures
The drug may also be used in treatment of bipolar disorders (manic-depressive insanity)
Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
The drug should be used with caution in:
- Chronic renal failure
The withdrawal of the drug should be performed over time as sudden stop of therapy may cause increased episodes of epilepsy. Use of the drug in children should be performed with caution and medical monitoring. The drug may affect activity that involves driving and other types of activity that may require increased concentration and psycho-motor reactions.

- Haemopoietic organs: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
- Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, hypersensitivity syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis
