What is Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains a combination of female hormones (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate) that prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). This drug also causes changes in your cervical mucosa and uterus, which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. Ortho Tri-Cyclen can also be used for purposes not specified in this manual.
Important information
Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you are pregnant or have recently had a baby. You should not take Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have one of the following conditions: uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, blood clotting disorder, circulatory problems, diabetic eye or kidney problems, unusual vaginal bleeding, Liver disease or Liver Cancer, severe migraine headaches if you smoke and are over 35 years old, or if you have ever had breast or uterine cancer, jaundice caused by birth control pills, heart attack, stroke or blood clot. Smoking can significantly increase the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack. You should not take birth control pills if you smoke and are over 35 years old. You may need to use backup birth control, such as condoms or spermicide, when you first start using Ortho Tri-Cyclen or if you miss doses. Follow your doctor’s instructions. The absence of a pill increases the risk of getting pregnant. Carefully follow the instructions of the “missed doses” if you forgot to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Some medications may make Ortho Tri-Cyclen less effective in preventing pregnancy, including antibiotics, hepatitis C medications, HIV/AIDS medications, withdrawal medications, or barbiturate sedatives. Tell your doctor about all the other medications you use.
Before taking this medicine
Taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack. You are even more at risk if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or are overweight. Your risk of stroke or blood clot is highest during your first year of taking birth control pills. Your risk is also high when you restart birth control pills after not taking them for 4 weeks or longer. Smoking can significantly increase the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack. Your risk increases if you are older and the more you smoke. You should not take combined birth control pills if you smoke and are over 35 years old. Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you are pregnant. Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor if you become pregnant or if you miss two menstrual cycles in a row. If you have recently had a baby, wait at least 4 weeks before taking birth control pills.
